THE CONTEXT OF ANOINTING

Did you know that when we identify ourselves with Yeshua that we are also identifying with the ‘Anointed one’? Here’s an excerpt from the dialogue between The Father and His Son Hebrews1:9 “You have loved righteousness [integrity, virtue, uprightness in purpose] and have hated lawlessness [injustice, sin].Therefore God, Your God, Has anointed You With the oil of gladness above Your companions.”

The definition of the Greek translated word ’Christos’ is Anointed that is the Messiah. For many, that word is simply associated with the pouring of oil and being dedicated but it goes far beyond the terms that we commonly apply to its meaning. In order to have a better understanding of how Yeshua’s status as anointed is pertinent to us, let us take a look at the term and its use in the Old Testament.

Exodus 28:41

You shall put the various articles of clothing on Aaron your brother and on his sons with him, and shall anoint them and ordain and sanctify them, so that they may serve Me as priests.

Anointing was not just a mere ritual performed to initiate a Priest into office but it was the certificate that qualified him into the Priesthood. It was the official and divine induction which gave the Priest the authority to act in full capacity as a member of the divine council. This meant that the Priest could no longer be considered a mere layman to disrespect his title.

In the Old Covenant, the symbolism of the office was represented by the Holy garments that the Priests wore. When the Priests were clothed in the Priestly attire, it indicated their function as a Priest. When he had accomplished his term in the office of a Priest, the Spirit of God withdrew from the person. This can be seen in Numbers 20:8 “After Moses stripped Aaron of his [priestly] garments and put them on Eleazar his son, Aaron died there on the mountain top.”

Likewise, in the New Covenant, our clothing or covering that makes us inviolable is Christ. Gal 3:27 “For all of you who were baptized into Christ [into a spiritual union with the Christ, the Anointed] have clothed yourselves with Christ [that is, you have taken on His characteristics and values].”

When we begin to identify ourselves with Christ in the New Covenant, we are introduced into the Melchezidek Priesthood which also consecrates us to serve as the ‘Anointed Ones’. According to the author of Galatians, we take on the characteristics of Christ. The definition of Characteristic is :a special quality or trait that makes a person, thing, or group different from others. In other words, we take on Christ’s role as a Priest and it is through the priestly anointing that we fulfill the will of Our Father.

You are anointed, this confirms why no evil can come upon you but only blessings will follow you all the days of your life! 👉
